Home Cinemas are becoming increasingly popular, but if you decide to install one you must think carefully about home cinema design. What system you buy, what seating you decide on and how you arrange your speakers depends on many factors, such as the viewer capacity you plan on having and the size of the room that will be the home to your home theater.

The optimum setup for a home cinema design is to give it its own dedicated room. This allows you to position seating, speakers, the display and equipment in the best possible positions. Budget, however, will be your next consideration. You’ll need at least a DVD or VHS player, a widescreen television set, an amplifier (preferably surround sound) and speakers. Make certain to leave room in your budget for cables and wiring as well.

You will also want to budget for interior design necessities such as seating, lighting, and acoustics. You will want the best seating you can get for the most comfort. Remember, you will be spending hours upon hours in the seating watching movies, so they should be ergonomically correct and comfortable, but not to the point where it would be easy to fall asleep in them. You will also want the seating to be acoustically correct – they should have some sort of upholstery, without lots of exposed wood or metal parts. The seating also shouldn’t have high backs, as this will affect the viewer’s experience of the sound by blurring it.

Lighting is also important. Too much light and you will be dealing with glare off of a screen or a washed out projection. Hang thick, heavy curtains of black or a drab color over any windows, and install a folding door over any doorways. Make sure any lighting in your home theater design is controllable so it can be turned off and on when needed.

You must also consider the acoustics of your home theater design. Having thick carpeting on the floor, hangings on the wall, and thick upholstery on the chairs will help. Using these things can help the acoustics immensely and may also remove the need for an acoustical diffuser. However, if they do now, you may want to think about applying acoustical foam where looks are not a concern, or purchasing diffusers to use around surround sound speakers to create a more natural sound.

Finally, positioning of your seating and equipment will have a large impact on your home theater design. Seating should be placed in the rear center of your home theater, facing the center of the screen – exact arrangement will depend on the size and shape of the room. Front speakers should be placed in a straight line in front of the seating and centered on it. Surround speakers should be placed alongside and to the rear of the seating on the walls, a few feet up above where the viewer’s heads will be.

With proper planning and careful thought, you can achieve great home theater design, and get the best movie viewing experience for your money.

What do the words home theater mean to you? A big screen TV in your living room with surround sound speakers hidden behind the couch, or a custom designed room with every possible high-end audio/video equipment and dedicated theater seating? The choice comes down to your level of use . . . and your pocketbook. Start with the room you plan to use as your home theater. If it’s your multi-purpose living room, think about mounting a flat-panel LCD HDTV on the wall and finding one of the many artistic solutions for hiding the screen when it’s not in use. Make sure the furniture that houses your audio/video components has a cable management system to hide power cords and sufficient ventilation. Rear wheels on the cabinet make accessing your connections much easier! There is a large range of possible entertainment centers: a plasma console or wall system, an entertainment center with bookcase or storage, cabinets to hold a large screen display. Be sure to measure your room accurately to know what will fit best in the space you have available. If you’re redoing a room or moving to a new place, now is a good time to prewire the room for audio, video, security and communication needs, including cabling for future technologies. It makes for an elegant, nearly invisible installation of equipment, with more leeway in the type of furniture you choose. Another possibility — if your “home theater” room also includes your computer desk, think about using your PC to store and play your favorite MP3 files, patched through an amplifier. There are so many choices — media stands, audio stands that hold 5 to 10 AV components, TV stands for any size television (some loaded with features like wire management systems, adjustable shelves, open ventilation, tempered glass) — as well as choices in styles and finishes, from the beauty of natural hardwoods to contemporary design elements. With such a broad variety of audio/video and other furnishings, mounts and accessories, even the most demanding A/V enthusiast or home decorator will be satisfied with the way your home theater looks. Once you’ve housed your components, the next most important choice involves your seating. Do you prefer watching movies in your home theater from the comfort of a recliner, cuddled with someone special on a couch, or from dedicated custom theater seating? Do you prefer seating covered with micro fiber fabric, microfiber suede, faux leather or premium leather? Does a home theater conjure up visions of kids with large tubs of buttered popcorn, beer and chips for the guys watching the big game, or romantic glasses of wine? Choose an easy-to-clean surface, and have sturdy tables close at hand to your seating. As long as you’re visualizing your perfect home theater set-up, remember to connect the lighting and the home theater system to a master remote control. With a few taps of your finger, the DVD spins, the lights dim, you sink into your seat, and enter a galaxy far, far away . . . right from home.

Have you just bought a wonderful surround-sound home entertainment system but no decent home theater seating to sit on to watch the latest rented DVD? Do you always have to squeeze next to the cat and your daughter who likes to hog the old sofa like it was her bed whenever she watches anything on the screen? Do you have to constantly pause the DVD to get your tomato juice from the kitchen benchtop because there is no place to put your drink without fear of spilling it on your white carpet? And does your back suffer terribly even only after 30 minutes of watching your favorite sitcom? Home theater systems and home theater seating – the suburban preoccupation of the decade If you’ve answered yes to any of the questions above, then despair no more. In the past five years or so, home theater seats have surpassed the comfort and support provided by the traditional movie theater seat. Home theater seating can range from actual movie theater seats with beverage holders to more plush reclining club chairs and home theater loungers with footrests and built in wireless bass audio. But how do you choose a good home theater seating? Below are some tips on how to choose a home theater seating that is just right for you.

Tips on how to choose the right home theater seating

1. The first thing to ask yourself is how many will you normally seat? – If you prefer your home viewing to be strictly limited to yourself and your only daughter, then you will only need a seating for a small group of three. – If you are planning to invite the whole neighborhood, then you may need to create one or more rows of grouped seating just like in a real theater. You can choose to have single seats carefully placed in your home entertainment or rumpus room or build a group of 2, 3 or 4 chairs.

2. The second and equally important question is will your current home entertainment or rumpus room have space enough for your home theater seating plan? It would be wise to allocate a room or part of a room that is spacious enough for your home entertainment area. Or if you have the budget and the inclination – you may want to add a special room for this specific purpose.

3. A very important priority in any home theater seating is comfort as you may need to be seated for an average of 90 to 120 minutes for a full length feature movie. Answering the following questions may help you to judge whether the home theater seating you are choosing will give you the level of comfort that you need. – Does the footrest extend before the backrest reclines? This is important so that your body remains supported and your movie viewing and line of sight is kept intact. – Are the armrests wide enough to rest your arms and provide the right balance? – Does the seat and back offer both firmness and flexibility? Does the seat provide high density foam cushions to provide both comfort and back support? – Does it provide full support from head to toe?

4. What style of home theater seating will fit your decor? After all, theater seats should be part of the home theater and should enhance its overall decor. Do you want an upholstered home theater seating or do you want to see some of the timber’s natural woodgrain enlivened by an oil finish? Do you want supple, luxurious leather or the warm caress of velvet? What colors complement your decor – the girly-cute pink of custard; the regal low-maintenance ruby of pomegranate or the uptown classy brown of biscuit?

5. Was the home theater seating constructed using techniques that have been proven to result in stronger and more durable loungers and seats that can withstand everyday use, such as using kiln-dried hardwood base frames and cushions made of high density 2-lb foam.

6. Last but not least, how much do you want to spend for your home theater seating? Whatever your budget, there seems to be a home theater seating for everyone’s fancy: – whether its the ,700 three-seater Rodeo Leather Lounge with built in wireless bass shaker, recliner, footrest and wide armrest rolls for the ultimate in home theater experience, – a vintage movie theater seat which had its previous home from a local movie house and which you’ve just bid successfully on ebay for , – or somewhere in between.

Home theater seating can vary widely and depends on the experience you want and your budget. You can make do with folding chairs or that garage sale sofa, but the better your seating is the better your home theater experience will be.

The first thing to think about is how many people your home theater will host for viewing on a regular basis. It isn’t economical to get twice as many seats as you will regularly have guests, but neither is it wise to short yourself on seating that you will have use for. Also think about the space you have in your home theater. This will effect what sort of home theater seating will be best for your space.

The next thing to think about is how much use your home theater will see. If it will see frequent use, you will want seating that is ergonomic, as well as made of durable materials that are easy to clean. Ergonomic seating is important so that the viewers do not get any sort of strain or aches during viewing. If you do not plan to use your home theater frequently you can choose seating that isn’t as comfortable or as durable or easy to clean, but keep in mind that this sort of seating may not be worth it in the long run.

Also think about what you want your home theater to look like. If you want it to look like a regular movie theater in miniature, then you will most likely prefer home theater seating that closely emulates that found in a regular theater. Alternately, if you wish to have more of a ‘honey’ look, you may wish to go with seating that is more like traditional armchairs.

Finally, keep in mind the features you want in your seating. This will affect not only price, but ease of use, ergonomics and comfort, and ease of cleanup. Rocker and reclining seats will be more expensive, but more comfortable. Seats with cup holders in the arms may also be more expensive, but will save space by eliminating the need for side tables, and may keep cleanup low. Viewers will have a stable place to put their drinks, rather than trying to balance them on their laps and then find a place to put the drink when they need a bathroom break. Some home theater seating even has massage units built in!
